Practice Makes Perfect

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Matt, Carter, and I went to Wilber yesterday for lunch with my parents and to spend some time with them, which resulted in me shooting my bow for the first time in over a year.  One would think that by hauling Carter around all of the time my arm muscles would be fairly decent, right?  Wrong.  I tried to pull my 49 pound (yeah, I’m a whimp, I know) bow back, and just about pulled a muscle, but luckily both my dad and Matt were nice about it by not making fun of me.  Instead they were quick to help me get it turned down to 42 pounds which seems to be much more manageable for now.  Hopefully in time I’ll be able to crank it back up again, but for now I’m just happy to get out and practice with my bow again as I’m really looking forward to deer season this year.  I skipped it last year since I was worried I’d trip and fall and harm our little one with me being so top heavy and off balance.

Last week I finally took some time to pack my maternity clothes away into boxes and pull my pre-pregnancy shirts out of storage.  While I was at it, I decided to try on my pre-pregnancy jeans to see if they were fitting any better and much to my surprise they fit!!    So, for me, it is true what they say – - your hips expand during childbirth, but they will eventually return to a somewhat normal position.  Seems like something silly to be excited about, but nevertheless, I’m really happy about it.

Yesterday after we got back from Wilber, Carter had his first “clingy/needy” evening, in my opinion.  I’m not sure if it was because he had a weekend of spending time away from home as well as out of mom & dad’s arms (he spent a lot of time in his car seat and with grandparents, aunts and uncles throughout the weekend) or if it was because he didn’t get good naps for the whole weekend, but he did not want to be set down for very long at all and I ended up carrying him around the house with me while I tried to do the housework I needed to do.  He just snuggled up on me and hung out without squirming…even while I was vacuuming.  It was a pretty good feeling – knowing that by being in my arms he was comforted and felt secure, but it makes me think that maybe full weekends need to be few and far between.  Because Matt and I have no problem handling them, but they can sure tucker the little guy out!

When Carter took his bath on Friday, we couldn’t help but get some photos of the little guy in his froggie towel.  Thought I’d share.  :)

Helping the Neighbors

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Wow, what a lazy weekend Carter and I had!  I hardly got anything done this weekend, but for some reason I feel like it is okay.  As if I’m entitled to a lazy weekend every now and then.

So on Friday I went tanning right after work since Matt said he could pick Carter up from daycare, and I really need to get some color on my legs before my friend’s wedding that’s coming up in two weeks.  Normally I wouldn’t care, but I’m a bridesmaid and I have open toed shoes, so I won’t be wearing hose and I don’t want to blind everyone…literally, I would.  Anyway, by the time I got home it was about 5:45 and just as I walked in the door, Matt was coming in from the backyard and said “Jerry says we have to be over at their place to eat at 6:00”.  Originally, I had planned to go over to our neighbors’ house for a patio fire, but the dinner plan was new to me.  Turns out that the family members they expected to come into town for their daughter’s graduation couldn’t come after all, so they had a bunch of food they needed help eating.  Since I never feel like cooking dinner these days, I was totally on board with helping them solve their little dilemma.  So, we ate dinner with the neighbors and then stuck around for the patio fire and a couple rounds of mint julep – okay, I only drank from the bucket once, but Matt took full part in the festivity.

Saturday morning I toted Carter to Target with me to load up on some extra bottles for pumping as well as some new pacifiers since he’s reaching his three month milestone and they’re supposed to be replaced every 3 months.  I know, it’s probably just a scheme to get the paranoid mothers to buy new pacifiers every 3 months and obviously I’m such a mother.  Anyway, I already love the extra bottles, as we’ve been exclusively bottle feeding breast milk for about a week now.  It was working out so nicely except for all of the bottle washing I was doing because I didn’t have enough bottles to be pumping a couple extra times each day without reusing bottles.  Now I only have to wash bottles once each day.  Yay!  :)

Anyway, my parents came up on Saturday morning to see us since they’ve been out of town so long for Dad’s work.  Carter was sleeping when they got there, but he eventually woke up from his nap and they were able to get to spend some time with him before heading out for a birthday party being held in Lincoln that afternoon.  Meanwhile, Matt got the yard mowed and worked on the garage siding.  Matt’s brother Jamee was nice enough to come over to help, and our neighbors, Gino and Donny, came over with their little “from a distance” leveling tool (I know the tool has some cool name, but I don’t know what it’s called).  Before long, the side of the garage was finished – only 3 more sides to go!  Of course, we’ll have to scrub the siding down and paint it after that (Matt found it at a great deal, but it’s stained to look like wood).  That part should go fairly quick with the paint sprayer we bought and used to paint the house last fall.

Saturday evening, it was off to the neighbors again for another dinner to help them with their food surplus.  At least that was the plan for Matt and Carter.  I had a bachelorette party to attend which I turned into a designated driver for since I’m not drinking these days.  Fine by me though as I got home around 1:00am, to bed around 1:45am (since Carter was ready for a bottle at 1:30), and was back up at 6:00am with our little man.  If I had drank too much, that would have been pretty painful.  And luckily, Matt was willing to get up at 4:30am to feed him and let me sleep…that helped too.

Sunday was by far the laziest day of the weekend.  I caught up on NCIS episodes and a couple of Deadliest Catch episodes in the morning.  Then Matt took Carter with him to Home Depot and Menards and after getting a couple of things done around the house I took about an hour nap until Matt put sleeping Carter in our room (in his carseat) who woke up just a few short minutes after being set down.  No biggie…we got up to play for a while then laid down for another nap while Matt worked on digging a hole to pour concrete to support our patio umbrella (he’s so busy with outdoor projects these days).  Around 6:00pm Matt came in to wake me up with the news that Jerry and Vicki wanted us to come over once more to help out with their overabundance of food.  Another hassle free dinner complete with dessert and the company of our wonderful neighbors…how could I refuse?  After dinner I gave Carter a bath before Matt read him a book and put him to bed and then Matt and I settled down to watch the Grey’s Anatomy season finale.  It was a great lazy day.  :)

Lazy weekends usually don’t come without a price though.  This week I’ll probably be scrambling each night to get something done to make up for being so lazy on the weekend.  Oh well…such is life!

Jinxed

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

I’m pretty sure I jinxed myself by telling everyone that Carter might finally be on a schedule because last night was not a good night.  Matt and I hardly got any sleep because the little guy was waking up every 1-2 hours.  I-yi-yi!!

I got my hair “deep conditioned” (aka colored) yesterday evening, and decided that I’d like to try a different hair style for a while – something shorter.  My hairdresser did a great job cutting it (she left it a little longer than the pictured cut because she didn’t want me to go into shock), but I haven’t quite figured out how to style it to look similar to the picture I’ve been admiring (shown below).  I tried to use my flat iron this morning, and it didn’t even come close to looking like the photo.  It’s probably going to be a while before I figure it out too…I’m not too knowledgeable when it comes to hair techniques.  In the meantime, I’m glad I don’t have any big events in the next week or two that require pictures!

The good news is that I’m still going to look cool no matter where I go because I have a son who can totally rock out baby sunglasses.  :)
