A Very Late Halloween Update

Matt and I were fortunate enough to get an invitation to an actual Halloween party this year, and decided we’d go all out for costumes.  After racking our brains for a paired up costume idea, we couldn’t come up with anything, so we took to the internet.  Matt stuck to the couples costume idea (liking the idea of Mario & Princess Peach the best), but once I found a Rainbow Brite outfit, I spent quite some time trying to convince him that we could go as whatever we wanted to – and I’d be Rainbow Brite!!  It’s important to note here that they didn’t have any Red Butler outfit options (Rainbow Brite’s boyfriend, for those of you unfamiliar with the popular cartoon), otherwise Matt may have given into my wishes.  After I realized it would be much cooler to dress up as a pair, we went through all of our options…a plug & outlet, brick house & brick layer, Pebbles & Bam-Bam, Robin Hood & Maid Marion, etc., but finally settled on Popeye and Olive Oyl only to find out that Popeye wasn’t in stock anywhere.  It was 1:00am on a Thursday night now, and we needed to make our purchases in order to make sure they’d get here by the following Friday.  Without too much additional fuss (since it was 1:00am), I agreed to do Mario and Princess Peach.  We were able to easily find the costumes for sale in our sizes – getting Matt the “deluxe” Mario of course (it came with an inflatable stomach).

Our disguises arrived the following week, in plenty of time before the holiday, and while Matt’s costume only needed to have a pair of work boots to be complete, my costume was a little different.  I still needed knee high socks, Mary Jane heels, and a petti-coat to help my skirt to have the full effect of Princess Peach’s poofy skirt.  The socks and heels were easy, but the petti-coat took a little extra effort.  With Matt’s help we were able to craft together a petti-coat within a few hour’s time on Friday night using a bunch of toole left over from our wedding and an old slip.  It was a nice team project for the two of us, and turned out looking fabulous!

So, the day finally arrived, and after watching the Husker game at Tod & Andrea’s, we got Carter dressed up into his Halloween costume (which was purchased in July, I think – we’ve had it for quite some time).  Our little man made such an adorable lobster, and a big pot completed the outfit.  At first, he resisted the hat, and he wondered why in the world we were putting him in a pot (a look of fear appeared), but it didn’t take long for him to stop caring and just enjoy the attention!

After visiting his Uncle Jamee, getting a visit from his Uncle Tod & Aunt Andrea as well as his cousins Brett and Tyler, Carter made the round around the neighborhood.  It was only three houses, but it was fun to show him to all of the neighbors we regularly hang out with.  They enjoyed seeing him as well and got a kick out of the pot transportation.  While we never got around to carving pumpkins, I think he had a pretty good “first halloween”.

That night, Pat and Chuck were on hand to take care of Carter while Matt and I prepped for our Mario and Princess Peach debut.  It was a good thing too.  I needed all of the time I could get to focus as I don’t normally do my hair, makeup, and attempt to look “cute”.  Despite having an hour and 45 minutes to get ready, I was still late, and needed an extra 10 minutes to finish up when Joel and Melissa (who were dressed up as tourists) arrived to pick us up.  Eventually we got out the door and made our way to the party.  It’s a good thing we dressed up as a couple because everyone else did too.  Every one of our previous costume ideas were occupied by another couple, but fortunately no other couple dressed up as Mario and Princess Peach.  When the results of the costume contest were announced, Matt and I were shocked to hear that we won!!  I was seriously amazed.  So, after a little more time partying and playing tippy-cup, we headed home with our loot (aka prize – a bottle of Captain Morgan Private Stock, a new Husker water bottle, and a new Husker koozie).  Once at home, we hung out around the patio fire the neighbors had going, and finally got to bed around 2am. All in all, it was the best Halloween yet – one we’ll remember for years.Halloween Family
