Word Extravaganza

August 27th, 2010 by Andrea

As Carter approaches his 18-month milestone (September 1st), his use of words is progressing every single day.  I think it’s each evening that we hear a new word out of his little mouth, so I started making a list of the words he can sign as well as the words he can say.  I realize this list doesn’t mean my child is a genius, but there is plenty of pride in my heart these days as I am able to communicate with our little man. Well, maybe I don’t understand everything he says, but I now have a topic for when he asks me an impossible to understand question followed by a word he knows. For example, “Beblubadaaaaa Dor?” Translates to “Blah, blah, Dora?” Anyway, here is the list…

Signs he knows –
More
All Done
Drink
Milk
Monkey (says oo-oo-oo)
Chicken (tries to say bawk-bawk-bawk)
Fish (puckers his lips to make a kissing sound)
Cow (says ooooo)
Sheep (says ba!)
Cat (says mea-mea)
Pig
Dog (pants)
Bird (says be-be-be – for peep-peep-peep)
Duck (says cack-cack-cack)
Elephant
Frog
Butterfly
Ball
Book
Flower
Banana
Apple
Hat
Bowl
Bath
Shoes
Airplane
Hungry
Help
Please
Thank you
Light
Toothbrush (this one is new this week)

Words he says –
Mama
Dada
Ace (EEEeeeee)
Baby (bebe)
Ball (bah)
Book (bu) – does the sign with this too
Cracker (cacuh)
Bath (ba) – does the sign with this too
Bye bye
Will gobble when shown a turkey picture (kaba-kaba-kaba)
Bear (bee)
Yellow (ello)
Gone (Ga) – uses this to tell me when his food or juice is all gone
Boat (bow)
No, no, no – will shake his finger when he says it.
Rock (gock)
Deer (dee)
Truck (cuck)
Bubble
Star
Choo Choo (doo doo) – will say this when he sees a train
Dude – courtesy of our daycare ladies
Dora – (Dor)

A Quick Update

August 24th, 2010 by Andrea

The last couple of days have shown more progress on the house, and it doesn’t seem as if it will slow down for now…which helps Matt and me to keep in good spirits. :) There has been quite a bit of work done for the heating and air conditioning system and the plumber continues to put in the pipes needed throughout the house. We met with the electrician this morning and spent a little over an hour with him, deciding where we want switches, outlets and data lines and letting him know what lights we’ve chosen for each room. He said he’ll start working on wiring tomorrow and should complete his first round of work by Monday. Also, while we were at the house with the electrician, a follow up framer arrived to complete the things the larger framing crew didn’t do. He started work immediately on our deck (got the floor joists up for that) and he also finished framing the ¾ wall that’s needed for the breakfast bar in the kitchen. We were told by the plumber that the follow up framer will also complete the installation of doors, so hopefully all of that work will be completed within the next week or two as well.

Thank goodness for a nice cool down that’s here this week. It’s a refreshing break from the humidity…I think I’m just ready for fall.

Only 56 more days in the apartment. My countdown is officially beginning. :)

Windows

August 22nd, 2010 by Andrea

I feel a little bad for not blogging this entire week since there was progress on the house nearly every single day, but I was feeling lazy.  Thankfully the framers weren’t as lazy as I was.  ;)   Here’s what happened this week…

Monday – framers finished sheeting the roof, got the tar paper on the roof, cut out all of the windows, and started installing the TyVek paper.

Tuesday – it rained Tuesday morning, so no work was done in the AM, but the framers still managed to get two windows installed and all of the other windows had been delivered.

Wednesday – the framers finished installing the TyVek paper and installed the remaining windows and the sliding glass door in the basement.  They would have installed the entry door, deck door, and garage entry door, but none of them were available, so the house is still not fully enclosed, but it’s getting close.

Thursday – it appeared nothing was done this day, but Matt assumes the plumber was at the house measuring for pipe and such that he’d need.

Friday – the plumber started working to move the water meter to a better spot (which included drilling out a portion of concrete), the shower for the master bath and the tub/shower combo for the main bathroom were placed in the spaces they’ll be installed, heating and air ducts were pushed into the trusses in the basement, and some plumbing work was started (the white tubes leading up from the basement into the master bathroom).  Also, Matt was off of work on Friday, so he picked up the entry and deck doors and delivered them to the site.  It appeared that most of the plumbing supplies had been brought that day too.

I imagine it will be another full week of progress this week, but I won’t guarantee that I’ll blog about each detail.  I’ve really been feeling lazy lately.  Here are a few photos of the outside of the house that were taken Thursday morning.

We got news from our builder on Friday too.  His new estimated completion date for the house is October 20th.  Sounds like a more reasonable estimate than his September 30th one was, so I hope he’s right with this one.  We have everything picked out that we’ve been told to pick out – shingles, siding, brick, lighting, flooring, appliances, countertops, cabinets, trim, doors, door hardware, and plumbing fixtures (I think that’s about everything).  So, my hope is that they won’t be waiting on us at all and can keep moving at a decent pace.

This weekend was kind of a lazy weekend.  I got to do some shopping, Matt got to do some golfing, and Carter had plenty of time to play.  Tonight we went to Matt’s counsin Joel’s house where Joel and his wife Melissa made us dinner.  It was delicious and we felt so spoiled!!  They have two cats, so Carter really enjoyed getting to pet them and “play”.  He scared them more than anything…so it was funny to watch.  Luckily, the cats were much faster than Carter.  Ha!!  On Friday night we went over to our old neighborhood to say hello to and hang out with our neighbors from before.  Everyone has been watching progress on our house and were joking about having parties when tornadoes are predicted (none of them have basements).  I can’t wait until we are close to them again and can bike to see them on a more regular basis.  I really miss all of them this summer.  :(

Hope everyone had a good week and weekend…and I hope it’s not another full week before I blog.
